A BRIEF HISTORY FROM REBIRTH YEAR OF 1986 ************
A TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY PROJECT COMPILED BY: GORDON PROVE CONTENTS THE REBIRTH 1986 1987 – 1989 THE FOLLOWING YEARS INITIAL SPONSORS APPENDIX I - Summary of the First Seven Years APPENDIX II - Nominal Roll of Registered Members 1986 – 1993 INDEX
THE REBIRTH – 1986 The re-forming of the Hervey Bay Lifesaving Club (HBSLSC) took place on 11th October, 1986. The club had previously been active from 1955 to 1966. As the first act of the rebirth process, a public meeting had to be called to gauge the level of interest and, with interest, future viability and likelihood of success in an area that actually had no surf. Chairperson of the steering committee, Gordon Prove, called a public meeting at the Hervey Bay Hotel on 21st July, 1986. The purpose of the meeting was to lay the groundwork and put a proposal before interested people. Special representatives from Queensland Surf Lifesaving Association in the form of Mr. Steve Andrews, State Field Officer along with Mr. Kerry Collins, Chief Instructor and Superintendent of South Barrier Branch and, from Bundaberg, Mr. Graham McKenzie, Deputy State President, all attended. Any future HBSLSC would need to affiliate with South Barrier Branch. Hervey Bay City Council was represented by Deputy Mayor, Mr. Ken Bennett and Alderman Peter Carey. Representatives from services clubs such as Lions and Rotary also attended. The Steering Committee, led by Gordon Prove, stressed that the idea of a surf lifesaving club in Hervey Bay was not something new; it was not being imposed upon residents, nor would it become a burden to them. It was put that there were motivated people with positive attitudes as well as qualified lifesavers who had been involved previously who were willing and able to bring the club out of recess and into real existence. The apparently obvious need for a surf lifesaving club to actually have a clubhouse had been contentious during the life of the 1955 – 1966 organization. The Hervey Bay News # 58 of 1st April, 1966 reported; “members of the Hervey Bay Surf Lifesaving Club, at their meeting last Sunday, voiced strong protest against unwarranted criticism. The criticism revolved around the club ‘having to prove themselves worthy of a clubhouse’ despite being viable longer then most Bay organizations and by the fact that they (the S.L.S.C) were one of the most financially secure sports bodies in the district.” The then Club Captain, Mr. Noel Madeen, said that he had been with the club from its early years and knew of the disappointment, frustration and eventual loss of members resulting from continued postponement of a clubhouse building. (Survival struggles and an ongoing lack of facilities were to beset the 1986 reformed club also) Makeshift facilities for valuable equipment was meant to be a temporary arrangement as the committee had planned for the membership to lease land within reasonable proximity to the public swimming area as gazetted and designated by the council and to have the ability to have expensive gear in suitable facilities. This was against the background of repeated knock-backs from the Burrum Shire Council and their lack of support for a clubhouse. There appeared to be a negative mind set concerning a club serving comparatively safe, still-water beaches such as those in Hervey Bay.(These myths were shown to be dispelled by Club records for that era and onwards.) An original proposal, dating from the mid-sixties, also had shared clubhouse facilities with Hervey Bay Sailing Club, but those repeated knock-backs from the then Burrum Shire Council contributed to the disbanding of the lifesaving club; even though those sceptics became upset when lifesavers proved them wrong by catching two Tiger Sharks off the sandbar. Hervey Bay did need an immediately available water safety service. Added incentive for the reforming of the Hervey Bay Club came out of tragedy; in January, 1986 when a four years old boy drowned in the so-called still, safe waters of the Bay beaches. In the same year, two men faced near death in those waters. Many older residents had expressed their feeling with regard to more secure recreation in designated and patrolled swimming areas. With recreation came avenues and sporting opportunities for members to take part in surf carnivals and competitions. A social contribution was established for members and the community in general. The lack of local surf and the affiliation with surf lifesaving gave both youthful and older members the desire and ability to visit other surf beach clubs. The Steering Committee faced a huge task involving raising revenue for rescue gear, generating and maintaining interest and the provision of training as well as the need for an on-the-spot first aid room and equipment storage facility. Probably against the odds, the committee fulfilled its task of resurrecting the club. Ensuing committees, with lots of the proverbial blood, sweat and tears through the tough times and with great efforts have brought the club to the point of 20 years of community service. In 1990, the Hervey Bay Lifesavers had enjoyed favourable assistance from the Hervey Bay City Council for a clubhouse. The lease of land was granted, the clubhouse plans approved and construction completed. The scoffers were proven wrong! The club continues to provide and/or participate in surveillance, preventive actions, rescues and assistance, first aid and stinger treatments, water survival, Nippers and fun, carnivals and competitions winners and triers. The early days were a test of endurance and, dare one say, character building? The “nuts and bolts” went something like; all gear had to be loaded and unloaded, washed down and put away. This occurred twice on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays. Transport by way of an old ute and equally old trailer over 10 kilometres to the beach, erect the tent, pull down the tent and back again. Foundation President, Wayne Kelly, Foundation Honorary Secretary Gordon Prove, Honorary Treasurer Sandy Barrow and Club Captain Jim Bull took up the challenge. Up to 1992, successive presidents each made an ongoing contribution to growth coupled with success. Darryl Harris and Greg Fox followed in the footsteps of Wayne Kelly. Wayne had said in 1987, “The lack of surf did not mean that the club was not functional. Hervey Bay is not the only club in Australia without surf, but top competitors have come from similar clubs in the same circumstances. Anyone can have a heart attack on a beach, or a swimmer with cramps in difficulty.” The first year recorded two major rescues, three other situations requiring speedy help, over 60 first aid cases of cut feet and stingers. The decision was taken to call the club the “Hervey Bay District” in recognition of equal involvement of Maryborough residents; the committee of the day agreed and the name was adopted. This was probably a first within the lifesaving movement. After deep deliberation, the club colours of red and white were chosen (not white and red, as white became transparent when wet!) The official opening day was Sunday 12th October, 1986 and by November membership numbers had already reached the 200 mark. The first mini-carnival, including a broadcast by Radio 4MB Maryborough, was staged on 21st December with 150 other club members from South Barrier Branch arriving for beach and water events. This period also saw the first survey of land, a valuable activity that was carried out, at no cost to the club, by Mr. Eddie Hudson with soil tests from Wide Bay Geotech and Deputy Club Captain Lex Hewitt. Both received the thanks of the club for their very valuable contributions.
1987 - 1989 In 1987, the club embarked on an ambitious fundraising program. An initial response took up the offers of Corporate and Corporate Foundation Life Memberships while share holdings in a new surf boat attracted great commercial interest from local businesses, especially with naming rights on offer. These rights allowed advertising material to be displayed on the sides of the boat. Wal Pavey Real Estate won naming rights for the first HBDSLSC Surf Boat which was known competitively as “Ripple Riders”. 1987 saw the issue of the first club newsletters entitled “Club Ripples” which recorded difficulties with some members developing “show-offs”, “know-alls” and the dreaded “piggy posers”. As with any similar club, we shared voluntary time with females giving rise to concerns about conversations and wanderings and presumed perving lifesavers. Some statistics from Season 1988/89 were:- · 22 assistance calls · 200 awards in safety categories · Nearly 300 Junior Awards · 200 places in carnivals · 150 first aid treatments including many stingers. This period also the time in which new procedures for stingers came into effect, with the passing of vinegar as an antidote for bluebottle hair and blubber stings; ice packs came into vogue along with the removal of remaining tentacles and water washing and strict care of A. B. C. Another change at this time was the cessation of female participation in Beach Flags, due to upper body tissue damage, alternatives were considered. Truly, this was a period of change. Meanwhile, the back and forth transport and handling of rescue gear continued. Loretta Lewis penned an appropriate ode to highlight the scene. On a beautiful Sunday morning, Down the Esplanade goes Gordon, yawning. A little tired with day only dawning, It’s the third trip for the morning.
As yet the Patrol Captain is unseen. Our neighbours have become “has beens”, Footie and sport is more fame. So, the same old faces do it again.
The President gets on the ‘phone, Whingeing from his nearby home, The tents are not up at the beach again. Listen to our critics at it, Amen.
You shouldn’t be there! Cries the council with despair.
But we’re dedicated lifesavers, With a job to do It’s voluntary, time and effort and all just for you. Due credit goes to Loretta for her capturing the scene so well. THE FOLLOWING YEARS The “No Name” Junior Newsletters were started for Nippers and Juniors. The foam boards of the day could not be repaired and, at a cost of $70 each, they needed to be restricted to use at events only. Six year’s worth of doorknocks and pub raffles kept the club viable but did not permit accumulation of funds over and above costs such as fuel expenses, IRB repairs. mechanics and levies. 18th January, 1987 was the club’s first Wheelbarrow Push and Beach Party Disco at the Pialba Hotel. What was it like to operate out of the back of a ute for seven years? Not encouraging! At this time, council asked the club to prove to them the availability of the total amount to start and complete the clubhouse within three years. The third edition of the “No Name” Newsletter became the “Weekly Wave” in November, 1991 and was designed by Michele Hopton. On the senior side, Darren Hauser competed on 17th November, 1992 at Tannum Sands for branch selection; with two seconds and a third in his three events. Radio 4MB Maryborough began music broadcasts from the beach during the volley ball finals. INITIAL SPONSORS It would be very remiss not to mention those vital early sponsors. They included:- Hervey Bay, Torquay and Pialba Hotels – four transceiver radios. Scarness Hotel – two rescue tubes. Torquay Hotel – beach tower constructed by Gary Whitechurch. Kentucky Fried Chicken – beach arena/enclosure. Jack Casey Motors – beach marquee. Where would the club have been without their like?

EVER ONWARD And so, the new team achieved the construction and commissioning of the clubhouse. The club continues to achieve. The days of operating out of the back of a ute have all but faded. It is very pleasing and gratifying to look back over the years to the time when I called that first public meeting in order to gauge the interest in the community for the establishment of a surf lifesaving club in Hervey Bay. It is equally pleasing, if not more so, to see and know that the club continues to exist and operate ********20 YEARS ON !!!!!!!!
